Bridging Management and Education: Competency-Based Leadership in Higher Education
External / Open Access
Abstract
In a world characterised by accelerating globalization and the increasing complexities
of knowledge economies the relationship between management theory and educational practice
warrants careful scholarly scrutiny. There is a need for creative models that harmonise managerial
effectiveness and pedagogical principles in higher education by connecting management and
leadership. This research explores the impact on institutional governance and student outcomes of
the competency-based leadership style. A multi method approach utilizing quantitative surveys and
qualitative interviews was used to study leadership identity, efficacy, and institutional culture.
Results suggest that leadership identity predicts student engagement and motivation to a substantial
degree, with leadership efficacy as the key factor. Similarly, qualitative narratives also indicated
that trust, collaboration, and adaptability within the local context is important in leader building.
These findings confirm that competency-based leadership is a catalyst for organizational resilience,
inclusivity and sustainable transformation within the realm of higher education. The research yields
both theoretical and practical implications through providing empirical pathways to align
managerial performance and educational leadership in modern universities.
